Luis Gil excited New York Yankeesfans, who received a hopeful sign after the right-hander’s first start.

Luis Gil took the mound for the first time in the 2025 MLB season as part of his injury rehabilitation.

Why is Luis Gil exciting New York Yankees fans?

The New York Yankees have serious problems in their starting pitching rotation and Luis Gil began his rehabilitation assignment on Sunday, July 13, 2025 with the Double-A Somerset team from the Bronx Bombers farm system.

Luis Gil pitched for a pitching line of three and one-third innings where he allowed just one run on a home run, two hits, one walk and struck out six, plus his first pitch was 96 miles per hour (MPH) and reached 97 MPH showing the power of his arm, threw 50 pitches 36 in the strike zone.

When do the Yankees expect Luis Gil to return to MLB?

Luis Gil was removed from the Yankees early in spring training due to a lat strain. The Yankees hope to have him back around the trade deadline (July 31, 2025). From Sunday, July 13, 2025, the Bronx Bombers have 30 days to be added to the MLB roster, unless he suffers a new injury.
