Love lost between former teammates Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner

What was once a promising relationship between Caitlin Clark and DeWanna Bonner during their time together with the Indiana Fever now appears to be completely over, with both players moving on and tensions spilling into public view.

During Tuesday night’s matchup between the Fever and the Phoenix Mercury, Clark, sidelined by a lingering groin injury, remained on the bench to support her team. Despite not playing, she was visibly engaged in the action, which ultimately set the stage for a confrontation with her former teammate.

Bonner had previously requested a trade due to limited playing time in Indiana. After being dealt to Phoenix, it became clear that her departure had left some unresolved issues with the players who stayed behind to continue competing with the Fever.

As Bonner slowly walked off the court during the game, she appeared to direct a remark toward Clark. The Fever star, known for her competitive spirit, did not stay silent and fired back. The exchange quickly escalated, and the two players confronted each other physically, briefly exchanging blows before being separated by teammates and officials.

Exactly what was said remains unclear, but the tension between the two was evident, marking an ugly chapter in what had once been seen as a potentially dynamic partnership on the court.

What looked like the start of a dynasty ended abruptly

In January, Bonner signed a one-year deal with Indiana, sparking optimism that her veteran presence alongside rising star Caitlin Clark could transform the Fever into contenders. However, after just nine games, Bonner requested a trade, seeking a team where she could play a more significant role. She was eventually moved to Phoenix, a decision that shocked many within the organization.

The Fever’s front office had envisioned a strong duo in Clark and Bonner, but the relationship never materialized as planned. Bonner later revealed that her frustration grew after being benched following three starts to make room for Lexie Hull. Though the team initially cited off-court issues as the reason, Bonner went on to play six more games as a reserve, which ultimately fueled her decision to leave.

Reports soon surfaced suggesting that chemistry between Clark and Bonner had never been strong. Sources indicated Bonner expected to be a full-time starter, and when that failed to happen, she decided her best option was to move on.

Since joining the Mercury, Bonner has established herself as a key contributor, but the bitterness from her Indiana exit clearly lingers. Tuesday’s game was her first chance to face her former team, and emotions boiled over.

Sophie Cunningham, who is sidelined for the season with a serious right knee injury, addressed the situation on her podcast, offering pointed advice on how departures should be handled.

It’s okay to be professional about it, and like send a text to your teammates.

Send a text saying and be like, ‘Hey, love you guys.’ Or you don’t even have to say ‘Love you guys.’ Just be like, ‘Hey, sorry this didn’t work out, good luck.’ You know what I mean? There’s a way to handle that, I think.
