Lisa Leslie’s unspoken bond with Angel Reese: Inside their battle for authenticity in women’s basketball

Angel Reese is one of the most controversial players in the WNBA. The Chicago Sky star constantly steals the spotlight for both her exploits on the court and her daring fashion choices. The latter has earned her both praise and criticism, and no one understands Reese’s struggles better than the legendary Lisa Leslie.

Since her days at LSU, Reese has stood out for her daring and unapologetic style. The Sky forward almost always chooses outfits that highlight her figure, like the daring look she showcased on New Year’s Eve through her Instagram account.

The revealing ensemble earned her a wave of criticism on social media, but Reese did not hesitate to respond without fear. “I ‘covered up’ and gave y’all COVERGIRL,” Reese shot back at her critics. In the midst of this constant battle, the WNBA star found a kindred spirit in none other than Lisa Leslie.

Leslie faced the same issues as Reese

On a recent episode of the podcast “Unapologetically Angel,” Reese asked Leslie if she, too, had received criticism for her bold fashion choices. “A hundred percent. All the time. And mostly, when I think about it, it was the players,” the former Los Angeles Sparks star admitted.

“The players talked about my shorts being too short all the time. ‘Why do your shorts have to be way up there?’ I’m like, ‘Because they’re up here? Yeah, period,'” Leslie recalled and then lamented, “Why? Why do you have to be asking me? Do you. I don’t question when players do themselves.”

Reese and Leslie are soul mates

The two-time WNBA champion felt that no one should criticize the style of others. “If you wear baggy clothes and a baggy uniform, whatever your style is, do you. But why do you have to hate on how I represent myself?”

Furthermore, she felt that being a professional player does not contradict being a daring woman. “I like the dichotomy of dressing up and then changing to go play basketball or playing basketball and then putting on a cute outfit afterwards. Worry about your own business.”
