Eli Manning know a thing or two about winning in the biggest stage possible, so that’s why the iconic New York Giants quarterback understands the greatness of Lionel Messi.
The international soccer player, who’s currently displaying his talent all over the United States while playing for Inter Miami, has gained fans all over the world, from all aspects of life and of all ages.
Currently, his team is part of group A of the FIFA Club World Cup, alongside Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras, legendary Portuguese club Porto, and Egiptian icon Al-Ahly. Inter Miami made history Thursday, when they became the first Concacaf team to beat a UEFA squad in official competition (they won 2-1 over Porto).
Lionel Messi has a new fan
Eli admitted that he was not rooting for any particular team, so he played a game to determine which squad he’s going to support. And he was happily surprised when fate got him rooting for Inter Miami. “Yes, Miami, that’s sweet, I love Messi, go Miami!” Manning said while holding an Inter jersey with the signature of all the players.
The former quarterback and the striker share something else in common: they both wore No. 10 during their career. Manning‘s number was retired by the New York Giants back in 2021, and we are sure that Messi’s jersey number will also be retired by at least his former team, Barcelona FC.
Messi scored a beautiful goal against Porto
In Inter Miami‘s game against Porto in Atlanta, Messi scored a stunning goal to seal the win for his side. That strike took Messi’s tally to 68 career goals from free kicks: 50 with Barcelona, 11 with Argentina, two with Paris Saint-Germain, and 5 with Miami, where he’s already the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Earlier in the week, the Argentine posted a photo with Italian legend Roberto Baggio – another man who knew a thing or two about taking free-kicks. Baggio had been at Inter Miami’s opening match of the tournament against Al Ahly, alongside a host of other legends, including another gifted Italian, Alessandro Del Piero, who spoke to FIFA about the chance to watch Messi live.
“His age doesn’t matter. He’s a fantastic player. I hope he has a great tournament, an incredible one even, just like he always does. I always look forward to seeing him play,” the iconic Juventus striker said about Leo’s ability to mesmerize crowds around the world.
