With three goals from Tadeo Allende, one from Mateo Silvetti, and another from Telasco Segovia, Inter Miami defeated New York City FC 5-1 and became champions of the Eastern Conference of the 2025 MLS Cup.
This match was not just another game for soccer fans or for Lionel Messi, who set a new record and also widened his lead over his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Leo surpasses CR7 in titles and assists
The 38-year-old captain joined the Florida team in July 2023, and since then, over the course of three years, he has won three titles: the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, and most recently, the MLS Cup Eastern Conference title, won on Saturday, November 29.
This new trophy was the 47th in Lionel’s career, consolidating him as the player with the most titles won in his professional career during his time at Barcelona (35), PSG (3), Inter Miami (3), and with the Argentine national team (6).
Leo thus extended his lead to twelve titles ahead of his sporting rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has accumulated 35 trophies: 1 with Sporting CP, 16 with Real Madrid, 10 with Manchester United, 5 with Juventus, and 3 with the Portuguese national team.
As if that weren’t enough, of the five goals Inter scored against NYC FC, Silvetti’s third came after an assist from Lionel, the 405th of the Argentine star’s professional career. Messi thus surpassed Ferenc Puskas’ 404 assists to become the top assist provider in soccer history.
Meanwhile, Cristiano leads the table in individual goals with 954, 46 goals away from reaching 1,000 goals, while the ’10’ has scored 896 goals.
Now, Leo and Inter Miami will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on December 6 at Chase Stadium, where the MLS Cup final will be decided.
For their part, CR7 and Al Nassr will face Al-Najma SC on December 21.
