Lionel Messi’s extraordinary consistency in world football has once again been highlighted by a recent statistical analysis, proving that age is no barrier to brilliance.

Approaching 39, the Inter Miami and Argentina captain continues to dominate the sport, ranking first globally in combined goals and assists over the past year. His achievements serve as a testament to his enduring quality and his ability to influence games at the highest level.

A comprehensive report from the CIES Football Observatory analyzed player performances across 67 professional leagues worldwide, tracking every goal and assist over the previous 365 days.

Messi emerged at the top with a staggering 59 goal contributions, consisting of 37 goals and 22 assists for Inter Miami. His performance outpaces even the sport’s most prolific stars, underscoring his sustained impact and remarkable reliability.

Even when accounting for the competitiveness of different leagues through a weighted scoring system, Messi remains unmatched. CIES applies a formula to balance contributions relative to league difficulty, and Messi‘s weighted index of 66.3 still narrowly surpasses France’s Kylian Mbappé, who came in at 65.4.

This demonstrates that Messi‘s output is not only abundant but also significant in the context of the level of opposition he faces.

Messi’s impressive global ranking and elite competition

While Messi leads both raw and weighted metrics, several other top players have also had outstanding seasons. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich achieved 42 goal contributions (35 goals and seven assists), securing second place in raw totals.

Anders Dreyer of San Diego FC contributed 41 goals and assists combined (22 goals, 19 assists), while Kylian Mbappé also reached 41 contributions, although most of his output came from goals (37). Rounding out the top five is Xherdan Shaqiri of FC Basel, who totaled 38 contributions with an equal split of 19 goals and 19 assists.

Messi‘s dominance is particularly impressive when considering his age. At nearly 39, most forwards are in decline, yet Messi continues to outperform younger peers consistently.

Even Cristiano Ronaldo, now 41, maintains a high level of production, finishing 15th worldwide with 31 goal contributions (29 goals and two assists). This underscores the exceptional longevity and professionalism both players have displayed throughout their careers.

The latest rankings highlight Messi‘s enduring influence in football. His ability to create goals and decisively impact matches demonstrates a combination of technical skill and game intelligence rarely matched in the sport.

Year after year, Messi proves that he is not only one of the greatest players of his generation but also an athlete capable of redefining performance expectations well into his late 30s.
