The long standing rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo has defined modern soccer for more than a decade. From Ballon d’Or debates to unforgettable Champions League nights, the two global icons have constantly been compared. This time, however, their rivalry unexpectedly reached an unlikely stage: the White House.

During a recent visit by Inter Miami CF, the Argentine superstar met with Donald Trump as part of a formal team appearance. In the middle of the conversation, Trump mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo had already been there before him, instantly creating a subtle comparison between the two players.

Two visits two very different treatments

Although both players are among the most admired athletes in the world, and their rivalry always sparks debate among fans, their appearances at the White House happened under very different circumstances.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s visit had been a more exclusive occasion. The Portuguese superstar attended a high-profile event that included prominent guests and business figures connected to Saudi Arabia. During that visit, Ronaldo received considerable attention from the president and even spent time in the Oval Office, turning the moment into a personal and memorable encounter.

Lionel Messi’s visit, on the other hand, was completely institutional. The Argentine forward arrived as part of a delegation with the entire Inter Miami squad, following the American tradition of inviting championship teams or major sports figures to the White House. Instead of an individual spotlight moment, the visit focused on the team as a whole, although Messi never goes unnoticed.

Messi vs Ronaldo at the White House

For more than fifteen years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the global conversation around soccer. Between them they have won multiple Ballon d’Or awards, broken countless records and led some of the biggest clubs in the world to historic victories.

That is why even a simple comment during a visit to the White House can bring their rivalry back into focus. The comparison between the two legends has become so ingrained in soccer culture that it continues to appear in the most unexpected places.

Even during this visit, the President of the United States made another comparison, this time between who is the greatest player between Pelé and Messi. What do you think is it even fair to compare them when they played in completely different eras? Only Donald Trump seems willing to make those kinds of comparisons, even in front of one of the best players in the world.

The world of soccer would not be the same without Messi and Ronaldo. And in the end, Trump simply does what he often does best: spark debate and rivalry even outside politics involving two soccer superstars admired all around the world.
