In a goal fest, Inter Miami became champions of the Eastern Conference of the 2025 MLS Cup after defeating New York City FC 5-1 at Chase Stadium.

Although team captain Lionel Messi did not score any of those goals, he made soccer history by not only adding another title to his career, but also setting an important record.

Messi makes history and heads for another final

With three goals from Tadeo Allende, one from Mateo Silvetti and another from Telasco Segovia, Inter Miami sealed their place in the MLS Cup final and could add another title to their tally if they beat Vancouver Whitecaps next Saturday.

However, Silvetti’s goal in the 67th minute of the match was assisted by Leo, who added his 405th assist in all official competitions in his career, surpassing Ferenc Puskas’ 404. In doing so, the team captain set a new record and became the top assist provider in soccer history!

As if this new milestone in his career were not enough, on Saturday night Messi added a new title: his 47th.

This conference title cemented his status as the most decorated soccer player of all time, ahead of Dani Alves with 43 titles and Andrés Iniesta and Marquinhos with 40.

Leo has won 35 titles with Barcelona, three with Paris Saint-Germain, three with Inter Miami, and six with the Argentina national team.

This new title was also a source of joy for his teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who announced that they will retire at the end of the season. This means that not only did they add another title, but they also extended their careers by one more game and could say goodbye in style.

Inter Miami will host Thomas Müller and the Vancouver Whitecaps, who are coming off a 3-1 win over San Diego FC on Saturday. The two teams will face off on December 6 at Chase Stadium, where both teams will be looking to claim victory in the MLS Cup final.
