Leo Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?: Marcelo reveals who was the toughest opponent

With a total of 546 matches played, 38 goals, and 25 titles, Marcelo Vieira was one of the key figures in Real Madrid‘s history. There, he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, but he also faced him on the field.

However, he also faced Lionel Messi, who challenged him both at Barcelona and for Argentina. Now, Marcelo has revealed who was the toughest to play against.

Cristiano or Messi: Who Was the Toughest to Face?

Vieira appeared on the YouTube channel of Brazilian legend Romário, where he answered several questions from the former Brazilian soccer player and 1994 World Cup hero.

With a career spanning clubs like Fluminense, Real Madrid, Olympiacos, and the Brazilian national team, Marcelo has played alongside many stars, but he has also faced several elite players.

Among the questions, Romário asked him: “You faced Cristiano and Messi, but who was the toughest?” Almost without hesitation, Marcelo chose the 38-year-old Argentine, whom he has faced more than 30 times.

“Messi,” he said. “Messi was really formidable-like, I’m still looking for him to this day, damn. Man, he’s really formidable; Messi is really tough,” Marcelo revealed.

“He understands all the positions on the field very well; he knows when the guy is coming with the ball, he already knows where to go, where to get out, and so on. I think he’s extraordinary,” he added.

Beyond the toughness on the field, Marcelo has revealed on multiple occasions that there was always respect between the protagonists of one of the most iconic rivalries in modern soccer: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid or Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo.

Over time, those matchups remain in memory as part of a historic rivalry that marked an entire generation and elevated the level of the game to its highest expression. With these words, Marcelo not only highlighted the difficulty of facing Messi or CR7, but also the privilege that this entails.

Marcelo officially retired from professional soccer a little over a year ago, on February 6, 2025, at the age of 36, but Lionel and Cristiano continue to add chapters to this iconic sporting rivalry.

With the Portuguese star determined to play in his final World Cup and bring the trophy home for the first time in history, and with uncertainty surrounding the presence of Argentina’s captain, the duo is on the verge of making history as the only players to have competed in six tournaments.

And Marcelo once again names Messi and his teammates among his favorites to win the title: “In no particular order… I’d say Brazil, Spain, France, and Argentina.”

The World Cup will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, kicking off on June 11, 2026, and concluding on July 19, 2026.
