LeBron James unveils 23rd signature shoe with help from his sons

LeBron James has never been one to treat milestones lightly, and his 23rd season in the NBA is no exception. As the Los Angeles Lakers star prepares for another year on the court, he has teamed up with Nike to launch his 23rd signature sneaker, a design that not only reflects more than two decades of dominance but also incorporates the input of his two sons, Bronny and Bryce.

The project, James says, is as much about legacy as it is about performance.

With Bronny now playing alongside him in Los Angeles and Bryce starring at Arizona, LeBron turned to them for guidance on what today’s players need from their footwear.

“They have a lot of influence on my life, and they have a lot of influence on the next generation,” James told GQ. “And, obviously, what I’ve built over the last two decades-plus is inspiring the youth as well.”

A shift from bulk to speed

For much of James‘ career, his signature shoes were known as big, tech-heavy sneakers suited for power forwards and centers. With retail prices often above $200, Nike justified the cost by loading the shoes with performance features, but in doing so, the line earned a reputation as too bulky for guards.

That began to change with the LeBron 20, which embraced a sleeker, lower-cut design inspired by Kobe Bryant‘s legendary sneaker line. The shift not only rejuvenated LeBron‘s brand but also made the shoe appealing to guards like his sons.

The LeBron 23 continues in that direction, with James making sure to keep his “ear to the ground” and listen to what younger players want.

“We’re trying to just listen to them, on what they need, what they want, what they see, how they feel,” he explained. “The game is evolving, and the footwear coincides with that.”

The release feels as grand as a retirement tour, especially with LeBron promoting the sneaker in China and tying the campaign to his 23rd season.

While he hasn’t officially signaled the end, many fans and analysts are interpreting the LeBron 23 as a capstone project, the kind of legacy-defining statement that hints at a final chapter.
