LeBron James to miss preseason: what this means for the Lakers’ championship hopes

The Los Angeles Lakers entered the 2025-26 season with heightened expectations after the blockbuster acquisition of Luka Doncic, but an unexpected setback threatens to disrupt their momentum.

LeBron James, one of the NBA’s most versatile players, will miss the entire preseason due to a glute injury.

This absence comes at a time when the Lakers are aiming to develop early chemistry among a revamped starting five.

James‘ injury could have far-reaching effects beyond missing practice sessions.

Jovan Buha explained on a recent episode of Buha’s Block that “this is a bad break for the Lakers right now, at least temporarily, if not longer term, just because the chemistry that you develop in training camp and the preseason, the on-court reps, this is the most the Lakers are gonna practice all season.”

The Lakers‘ starting lineup seems to be taking shape with Doncic, James, Austin Reaves, and Deandre Ayton expected to start, while Jake LaRavia and Rui Hachimura vie for the final spot.

JJ Redick’s influence in shaping rotations remains crucial, particularly in determining who complements the team’s two stars.

James‘ preseason absence deprives the Lakers of the chance to see how these pieces mesh in game situations before the regular season begins.

Lakers must establish early-season momentum

The Lakers‘ early schedule includes 16 games against teams that failed to make the playoffs last year.

These matchups present a prime opportunity to build a solid record and establish team rhythm. Without James on the court during preseason, however, the team may struggle to set the tone.

LeBron spent the offseason working on catch-and-shoot three-pointers to allow Doncic to handle more ball-handling responsibilities.

While this adjustment highlights James‘ adaptability, it also underscores the challenge of adjusting his role. Until the team has the chance to test these dynamics in live action, expectations remain uncertain.

But Buha emphasized the lost opportunity, adding, “I think this is a valuable opportunity to establish that on-court chemistry and synergy between Luka, LeBron, and Austin.”

That opportunity, however, will have to wait until James is cleared to participate in regular-season games.

For the Lakers, balancing James‘ health with the team’s championship aspirations is a delicate task.

Preserving his body early in the season may be necessary to ensure longevity, but the cost is delayed integration and fewer early wins.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the Lakers compensate for James‘ absence in their preseason games and whether other players can step into leadership roles during this critical period.

The team’s path forward will likely depend on how quickly Doncic, Reaves, Ayton, and the rest of the roster can adapt to new responsibilities.
