LeBron James’ three “simple” options after Jeanie Buss’ accusations

LeBron James‘ NBA journey has been nothing short of historic. Twenty-three seasons, three teams, and countless records define the Akron native’s career. But with recent reports revealing the inner workings of the Los Angeles Lakers, speculation about his next move has intensified.

According to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst, LeBron now faces three clear paths. Speaking on Get Up, Windhorst explained: “He can either remain with the Lakers, he’s not getting traded…he’s got a no-trade clause. He’s getting to remain with the Lakers at a pay cut. He can go to another team, which would be fascinating. Or, he can retire.”

Financial realities make his decision more complex. James is under a two-year, $101.3 million contract, fully guaranteed, earning an average of $50.6 million per season.

In 2025-26, his salary, cap hit, and dead cap total $52.6 million. With his contract expiring after that season, he will become a free agent, giving him leverage but also placing him at a crossroads.

Lakers not built for a championship today

Windhorst points out that the current Lakers roster is unlikely to contend immediately.

“They’re not built to win a championship now. Maybe in the next two years, but not at present,” he noted.

During 2025-26, Los Angeles is projected to hold a 26-17 record in the Western Conference, struggling defensively at 26th overall.

Injuries to Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Adou Thiero, combined with salary commitments to LeBron, Luka Doncic, and Hachimura, make postseason success challenging.

Despite these hurdles, LeBron has remained unfazed. Regarding rumors about leaving, he told the media, “I don’t really care about the articles,” and added, “I’m good.” His statements suggest loyalty to the Lakers, even amid organizational changes under new owner Mark Walter.

While championship aspirations may be deferred, the Lakers are exploring roster adjustments. Interest in players like Sacramento’s Keon Ellis hints at possible moves. Ultimately, LeBron James‘ decision-stay at a pay cut, switch teams, or retire-remains his to make. For now, the NBA’s spotlight will continue to follow the Akron Hammer as he weighs the future of a legendary career.
