LeBron James steps back as Lakers hand offense to Doncic and Reaves

The Los Angeles Lakers are charting a new course this season, one where LeBron James isn’t always the primary option, and Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are carrying more offensive weight as the team solidifies its spot in the Western Conference playoff picture.

As the regular season winds toward its climax, the way these stars coexist has become one of the NBA‘s most compelling storylines.

James, entering the latter stages of his historic career, has already notched league milestones in 202526, including becoming the oldest player ever to record a triple-double and extending his standing among the NBA‘s all-time minutes leaders.

Despite his continued production, the Lakers have leaned more on Doncic‘s dynamic scoring and Reaves‘ lategame aggression to steer their offense, a shift that reflects both strategy and necessity in a tightly contested West.

Recent results underscore that evolution. In a commanding 120-106 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic racked up a triple-double with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, while Reaves matched him with 31 points of his own.

Combined, the duo’s performance helped Los Angeles tie Minnesota in the standings and push the Lakers into a favorable position as March unfolds.

At the same time, James continues to provide meaningful contributions, whether through scoring, facilitating, or leadership. In Monday’s 100-92 victory over the Houston Rockets, he chipped in 18 points alongside Doncic‘s 36 and Reaves‘s 15 during the Lakers‘ sixth consecutive win.

His willingness to dive for loose balls and set the tone with hustle plays impressed coach JJ Redick and teammates alike, even in tight contests.

What has changed this season is how the Lakers distribute responsibility. With Doncic regularly posting huge nights and Reaves demonstrating the ability to ignite LA‘s offense in key moments, James has been able to complement rather than dominate, a luxury few superstars get later in their careers.

“He’s still going to be and has been a high usage player relative to your average player, and the best thing for our team is him being the third highest usage player,” Redick said after Monday’s win.

Lakers finding balance during win surge

Data from fancompiled tracking shows the lineup of James, Doncic, and Reaves has been more effective together as the season has progressed, particularly since the All-Star break.

The trio’s shared on-court net rating has improved, suggesting the chemistry is trending in the right direction as LA pursues postseason positioning.

Reaves‘ role has been especially noteworthy. Beyond his scoring surge against Minnesota, his assertiveness has sparked the offense at moments when the Lakers needed a lift, a development that has sparked discussion among Lakers fans and analysts alike about how to allocate minutes and touches.
