LeBron James opened up about his longevity and how he maintains his performance as he enters a historic 23rd NBA season as he credits his family for his endurance in the sport.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar credited family, rest, and perspective for keeping him feeling youthful despite nearing 41 years of age, with retirement looming on the horizon.
Over the past few years, every Media Day brings questions about LeBron James‘s future and this season, he provided an honest reflection on playing over two decades in the league.
While acknowledging the physical toll, James explained that the people around him contribute to his sense of vitality.
“I think you are of age, which you I guess, tell your mind you are,” LeBron said. “And I’m around a lot of young guys.
“I’m around a 10-year-old daughter who is running through the house all day, every day…I have a 18-year-old son…dancing with his mom and sister.
“My 20-year-old [Bronny] is right over there, turning 21, like how could I not feel young?”
He emphasized that his family life is integral to his energy and mindset. James specifically highlighted his wife, Savannah James, and the importance of good sleep.
“I mean, my wife is beautiful, I look good,” James added. “I look at my age just like the wine that I drink.
“The older wine I drink, the better it is. I feel great. I mean, I don’t know. Sleep well, I guess.”
Last season, James played in 70 games for the Lakers at age 40, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists over 35 minutes per game.
While questions about retirement persist, he continues to show up with consistency and commitment as discussions about LeBron James investing millions in his body remain frequent.
The four-time NBA champion has built a regimen combining physical training, nutrition, and recovery strategies as he continues to push himself to the very limit of what should be possible for a modern athlete.
But ultimately, his family and personal life are central to his approach, providing balance and mental sharpness that complements his on-court preparation to make him one of the most feared players in the NBA.
