LeBron James didn’t mince words when addressing his recent absence. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar told reporters Monday that dealing with sciatica is “no joke,” revealing he battled the same nerve issue two years ago – an injury he says no one should dare laugh about.
“If you’ve had it, then you know what the hell it’s about,”James said after rejoining the team following their five-game road trip. “If you ain’t never had it, people making jokes about it – I pray you never get it. It’s not fun.”
James, who had been assigned to the Lakers’ G-League affiliate last week to ramp up workouts, said the original injury occurred during the offseason two years ago. This time around, the four-time champion appears on track to suit up soon as he prepares for a historic 23rd NBA season.
What will happen when LeBron returns?
The Lakers managed an impressive 10-4 record without LeBron, thanks largely to Luka Doncic’s leadership and a breakout stretch from Austin Reaves, who has averaged 28.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists while shooting 48.2%.
Still, LeBron’s return has sparked speculation about whether the team’s new dynamic might shift – or unravel. Head coach JJ Redick dismissed those fears, praising James as one of the most adaptable players in league history.
He’s adapted throughout his career,” Redick said. “The system, his teammates, what the game requires. The league has evolved, he’s evolved. It’s why he’s still in year 23.”
Redick is optimistic about James’ return
Redick said he expects some hiccups as James finds his rhythm, but emphasized that LeBron, Doncic, and Reaves all understand their roles – and how to elevate one another.
James is currently listed as TBD for Tuesday’s matchup against the Utah Jazz. His status will ultimately be determined by conversations between him and the medical team.
