LeBron James reacts to Dirk Nowitzki revelation as NBA icon opens up on trademark move

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and co-host Steve Nash explored the deeper strategies of basketball in the latest episode of the ‘Mind the Game’ podcast.

There, they shone a spotlight on the “nail iso” tactic – a move famously refined by Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki. This thoughtful exchange reignited discussion around high-level basketball IQ and highlighted how past innovations continue to influence today’s game.

Nowitzki, celebrated for his unmatched footwork and mid-range shooting, shared his insights in response to the podcast discussion.

He said, “Hey LeBron and Steve, thanks for the shout-out. I appreciate it. You know, the nail iso thing started when teams, of course, switched a lot. Switched my pick and rolls a lot. And by the time I rolled the little guy down to the block, somebody else would run over and back switch from the weak side. And then you’re deep in the clock.

“By the time I turn around, I have another big on me. And so, we thought of a way to have the mismatch iso against the little guy without, you know, the whole back switch. So the easiest was just after a high pick and roll, just to give me the ball right there on the nail. … Wherever I would catch the ball, I would just turn around and probably shoot over the smaller defender.”

LeBron was quick to show appreciation for Nowitzki’s breakdown, replying, “So goood!!!!! Thank you for the great insight and mind of the game we all love @swish41.”

The mutual respect on display emphasized the ongoing dialogue between the greats of different eras and the enduring quest to understand and improve the game.

Strategic thinking across generations

Now co-hosted by Nash after JJ Redick stepped down, ‘Mind the Game’ continues to distinguish itself through its analytical depth and focus on the mental side of basketball. It’s not just about stats or highlights – it’s about understanding why plays work, how stars adapt, and what separates great players from the rest.

The segment on the “nail iso” play served as a prime example of basketball evolving through strategic innovation. It illustrated how players like Nowitzki didn’t just rely on skill but on smart, situational decision-making. James and Nash’s discussion brought those details to the forefront, turning a play into a teachable moment for fans and aspiring athletes alike.

Their ability to bridge the gap between generations not only honors the sport’s past but ensures its thoughtful evolution. Each podcast episode offers a rare glimpse into the minds of two of the game’s most intelligent players, revealing layers of strategy that often go unnoticed.

In a sports media landscape dominated by surface-level takes and quick reactions, ‘Mind the Game’ sets itself apart. Through detailed analysis and a passion for basketball’s nuances, LeBron James and Steve Nash are not just hosting a podcast – they’re preserving and enriching the legacy of the sport.
