LeBron James’ new ‘love interest’ is already causing him pain, while his future with the Lakers remains uncertain

LeBron James has never hidden his love for competition – on the court or beyond. But this offseason, the four-time NBA champion and current Los Angeles Laker is channeling more of his time and energy into a new passion: golf.

Far from romantic entanglements or personal scandal, LeBron’s “new love” is simply the fairway. Yet like many athletes venturing into new territory, he’s learning that even a recreational pursuit can come with its own headaches.

“What am I supposed to track my ball in this?” James asked rhetorically on his Instagram story while surveying a fog-covered course. “It doesn’t even matter if I hit straight!” he added with visible frustration.

Even with his trademark intensity, the game of golf has proven to be a humbling challenge for one of basketball’s greatest minds.

He’s certainly no Happy Gilmore, who switched from Ice Hockey to golf in the classic 1995 movie. At least, not yet.

Lakers future still looks murky

While golf may be helping LeBron decompress during the offseason, it also mirrors the uncertainty in his professional life.

As the new NBA season approaches, LeBron’s long-term standing with the Lakers appears less stable than ever. Although he exercised his $52.6 million player option, the future beyond this season is far from clear.

Rich Paul, LeBron’s agent, hinted recently that James is keeping his options open.

“He wants to evaluate what’s best for LeBron,” Paul said, suggesting that his client is still driven by the desire to contend for titles – and is carefully weighing whether Los Angeles is still the right place to do that.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager, remains publicly hopeful that LeBron will finish his storied career in purple and gold. But actions within the organization suggest a shift toward a younger, Luka Doncic-led core.

The 26-year-old just inked a $165 million extension, signaling that he’s being groomed as the centerpiece of the Lakers’ next chapter.

Even within that context, LeBron’s voice in personnel decisions appears to be waning. He’s reportedly been less involved in front-office conversations and declined to comment on his future when approached at Summer League, offering only a terse, “I ain’t got nothing to talk about.”

LeBron set for another title run away from LA?

All of this has fed speculation about whether the 40-year-old will look for a final title run elsewhere. With his name loosely linked to other teams – including cryptic posts with Nikola Jokic’s agent and training appearances at non-Lakers facilities – fans and analysts alike are watching closely for any hint of his next move.

But it’s clear: LeBron’s so-called “new love interest” isn’t a tabloid-worthy relationship – he’s perfectly happy with his wife Savannah. No, it’s a golf obsession that’s providing both challenge and release. And like his approach to basketball, LeBron brings full intensity to the links, even when the game isn’t going his way.

Whether he stays in Los Angeles or explores new territory in 2026, LeBron continues to evolve. His embrace of golf shows he’s not afraid of starting from scratch – even if the fog makes it hard to see the fairway.

And perhaps that same mindset will guide him as he decides the next steps of his basketball journey.
