Diogo Jota, striker for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national football team, died in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, in a road accident in the province of Zamora, Spain.
The young Premier League striker was 28 years old, had recently married his partner, Rute Cardoso, and was the father of three children. In addition, this accident claimed the life of his younger brother, Andre Silva, who was also a professional footballer, for Penafiel in the Portuguese Second Division.
What happened to Diogo Jota?
According to the Guardia Civil, the accident took place at around 00:35 hours at kilometer 65 of the A-52 motorway, at the height of the municipality of Cernadilla, in the region of Sanabria.
The first hypotheses suggest that a tire on his Lamborghini may have burst while he was trying to overtake another car and this would have caused Jota to lose control, crashing, causing the car to catch fire, causing the death of both.
Witnesses to the incident immediately alerted the emergency services when they saw the fire, which even spread to nearby vegetation. Despite the quick response of the emergency teams, it was not possible to rescue the occupants alive. The identity of the deceased was confirmed by documents found at the scene and by the vehicle’s registration. Diogo Jota’s wife was the one who formally identified the bodies, and she received psychological assistance after the tragedy.

Diogo Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020, played 182 games for the English club, scoring 65 goals and winning three titles, including the recent Premier League. He was also an international with Portugal and won the Nations League twice.
