LeBron James makes NBA history as departure rumors swirl around the Laker

In an evening that mixed individual legacy with team disappointment, LeBron James etched his name even deeper into NBA history by becoming the first player ever to record 43,000 career regular-season points.

The achievement comes even as the Los Angeles Lakers were soundly defeated 111-89 by the Boston Celtics on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena.

James‘ milestone came midway through the third quarter when he calmly converted a layup off a feed from teammate Luka Doncic, giving him career point No. 43,000 in front of the home crowd.

Already the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James now stands alone at the top of the league’s regular-season scoring list, with a total that outpaces every other player by thousands of points.

The moment was a stark contrast to the larger narrative of the evening: a tough night for the Lakers, who were unable to keep pace with Boston‘s balanced assault.

Jaylen Brown led the Celtics with 32 points, while Payton Pritchard added 30, sinking six pointers and dishing out eight assists as Boston completed a season sweep of its historic rival.

This achievement reinforces James‘ remarkable consistency and longevity. At 41 years old, he has continued to produce at a high level during his 23rd NBA season, a season he formally opted into last June, guaranteeing he will extend his career beyond all peers in length and accumulation.

Even on a night when his team was largely outplayed, James contributed a stat line that reflected his enduring all-around game: 20 points, five assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block in 34 minutes.

Enduring legacy beyond the numbers

The sheer scale of James‘ scoring supremacy becomes clearer when placed alongside the league’s all-time greats.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who held the career scoring record for decades, retired with 38,387 points, more than 4,600 fewer than James‘ current total. Other scoring legends such as Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan remain far behind in the all-time rankings.

James also joined an exclusive durability club on Sunday, marking his 1,600th regular-season game in the NBA, a feat matched by only one other player, Hall of Famer Robert Parish, who sits at 1,611 games played. James is now within striking distance of surpassing that record as well.

Throughout his career, James has steadily climbed basketball’s scoring ladder, first surpassing the previous all-time mark in the 2022-23 season and then continuing to add to his lead ever since.

Fans and analysts alike have marveled at James‘ accumulation of scoring milestones, from reaching 40,000 points years ago to now rewriting the history books completely.

Beyond the scoring total itself, James‘ scoring longevity highlights a rare blend of elite production and durability.

Entering this season, he was averaging 21.7 points, 7.2 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, demonstrating his ability to impact contests in multiple ways even as his role with the Lakers has evolved.
