LeBron James’ injury raises major concerns about his recovery for the upcoming season

The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a dramatic and unexpected start to the 2025-26 season, struggling through a winless preseason and now facing a major setback. Just days before their October 21 opener against the Golden State Warriors, the team confirmed that LeBron James has suffered a right-side sciatica injury that could sideline him for three to four weeks.

While initial reports suggested the issue was manageable, spinal specialist and physiotherapist Thomas Dekkers warned that LeBron’s recovery might be more complicated than expected. Given the 40-year-old superstar’s physical demands and long career, the injury raises serious questions about how soon he’ll be ready to return, and what it could mean for the Lakers’ early-season performance.

LeBron James’ injury update and expected return timeline

LeBron James was preparing to begin his 23rd NBA season, eager to reach another milestone in his legendary career. However, his return to the court has been delayed after NBA insider Shams Charania reported that the Los Angeles Lakers star is sidelined for at least three to four weeks due to sciatica on his right side. “LeBron James is out for the start of the 2025-26 NBA season,” Charania confirmed in his report, sparking concern across the league.

Following the announcement, social media quickly flooded with messages from fans and analysts speculating on when the four-time champion might return. The injury means LeBron will likely miss the Lakers’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors at Crypto Arena, a highly anticipated matchup that was expected to mark the start of his new chapter alongside Luka Doncic.

The news has raised alarms inside the Lakers organization, which remains hopeful for a speedy recovery for the 40-year-old superstar. However, spinal specialist and physiotherapist Thomas Dekkers offered a more cautious outlook, suggesting the rehabilitation process could be more complex than expected. His remarks have intensified uncertainty around the Lakers’ early-season hopes and LeBron’s ability to stay healthy through his 23rd campaign.

Specialist Thomas Dekkers explains the complexity of LeBron James’ injury

Spinal specialist Thomas Dekkers shared insights on his X account about LeBron James’ recent sciatica injury, explaining why it’s more complex than it may seem. “Radicular or neuropathic pain-commonly called sciatica, is a big problem and not acknowledged enough,” Dekkers wrote. “Out of the 12 spinal patients I saw yesterday, six had a radicular pain component, some very severe.”

Dekkers also emphasized how serious this condition can be, saying that radiculopathy affects 4-8% of people annually, compared to 38% who experience back pain. He noted that while often underestimated, sciatica can be extremely painful and difficult to recover from.

Finally, Dekkers warned about misuse of the term, adding,“For those who actually have it, it’s an awful condition that demands the best of our care.” His analysis suggests LeBron’s recovery may take longer than expected.
