LeBron answers question on Lakers future as NBA season hangs in balance: “Not my pay grade”

The Los Angeles Lakers are once again standing at a crossroads, and this time, the pressure feels heavier as the trade deadline approaches and LeBron James continues to chase one more championship in a crowded Western Conference.

After another uneven stretch and a timid loss to the New York Knicks, concerns have grown around roster balance, depth, and defensive consistency, while general manager Rob Pelinka has reportedly reduced his involvement in active trade discussions.

With Thursday’s deadline approaching on February 5, uncertainty now surrounds even James’ future, as league executives quietly monitor whether the franchise will commit fully to the current core or explore a dramatic late move.

Despite the speculation, LeBron has publicly maintained confidence in his teammates, emphasizing patience, internal growth, and steady improvement, even as critics question whether this roster is built for a deep postseason run.

“We’re 29 and 19 right now, and we’ve had some really good moments,” James said to media. “We have some not-so-good moments, we want to continue to try to build off of that.

“Speaking on anything other than that is not my pay grade. I like this group. But we gotta continue to get better. And that’s good. We should want to get better, it’s only Feb. 1. But we’re gonna continue to get better and better.”

The four-time champion has repeatedly pointed to injuries as a major obstacle, arguing that constant lineup changes have limited chemistry and rhythm, especially alongside Luka Doncic in high-pressure situations.

James also highlighted the absence of Austin Reaves, noting the team’s stronger record when he is healthy, and Doncic echoed that optimism, adding, “I think we’re in a good spot. Obviously have some work to do. Today, we missed a lot of good looks. But I think we have a great group.”

Lakers stopped by New York Knicks

The Lakers’ uncertainty was on full display in New York, where OG Anunoby scored 25 points and Landry Shamet added 23, leading the Knicks to a 112-100 win that exposed familiar defensive and transition issues.

Josh Hart finished with 20 points, while Jalen Brunson recorded 12 points and 13 assists, helping New York secure its sixth straight win and reinforcing its status as a growing Eastern Conference contender.

James posted 22 points, six assists, and five rebounds in his 32nd appearance at Madison Square Garden, shortly after earning his NBA-record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection as a reserve.

Doncic delivered a standout performance with 30 points, 15 rebounds, and eight assists, on the anniversary of the blockbuster trade that brought him to Los Angeles and reshaped the franchise’s long-term vision.

Lakers vs Knicks: The Key Stats

The atmosphere carried extra significance, as speculation around James’ future boosted ticket prices and television ratings, turning the game into both a sporting event and a symbolic moment.

New York seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 38-26 through fast-break baskets and timely three-pointers, creating separation that Los Angeles could not overcome.

Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds, while the Knicks’ balanced attack highlighted the Lakers’ ongoing struggle to defend multiple scoring threats.

For Los Angeles, the loss reinforced concerns about late-game execution, perimeter defense, and bench production, areas that may determine whether management makes a deadline move.
