The biggest story of the NFL offseason is who will be the Browns’ starting quarterback. We’ve heard the takes from many insiders and a very cautious Kevin Stefanski, but now we’re actually starting to learn what the Cleveland locker room thinks about Shedeur Sanders.
The battle is fierce between the two rookie QBs – Sanders and Dillon Gabriel – but as the weeks go by, it seems Shedeur is settling into a better position than the former Oregon quarterback.
Browns vets’ real thoughts on Sanders
On a recent episode of Nightcap with co-host Shannon Sharpe, Chad Johnson accidentally leaked what Browns veteran players actually think about Sanders’ style of play and whether he can be an influential player for the franchise.
“I talked to Denzel Ward, I shouldn’t say his name,” Johnson said. “But anyway, I talked to some people, and (Shedeur) looked different. There’s a difference when that young bull is out there spinning that ball, you hear me?”
“Whether he’s going with the first team, second team, or third team. It don’t matter. I understand getting drafted in the fifth round. All that means nothing when it’s time to play football, and that whistle blows. He looks different than the rest of the competition. That’s what I heard,” Johnson conluded.
Earning praise from a respected veteran like Ward suggests Sanders is making the right impression at Browns practice. If the veterans are noticing it, chances are the offensive coaches – and head coach Kevin Stefanski – have taken notice too.
This is not good news for the rest of the QB room – Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, and even the injured Deshaun Watson – who are all fighting to win the starting quarterback role. We’ve seen every Cleveland QB get praised by Stefanski, but it’s a totally different thing to earn praise behind the scenes from veteran teammates.
