The Laver Cup is an annual team competition featuring some of the top male tennis players from Europe against their counterparts from around the world. Played over three days, the tournament combines singles and doubles matches, providing a dynamic and fast-paced environment for both players and fans.
Each team consists of six players. The top three players from Europe and the rest of the world automatically qualify based on their ATP singles rankings following the French Open. The remaining three spots on each team are selected by the team captains, known as “captain’s picks.”
These picks can be made anytime before the US Open. If any player is announced as a captain’s pick before the French Open, the captain is obligated to select them, even if their ranking doesn’t meet the cutoff.
Competition Format
The tournament includes five sessions of matches spread across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each match, whether singles or doubles, is played as best-of-three sets. In the case of a split after two sets, the third set is decided by a 10-point tiebreaker.
Players are required to compete in at least one singles match during the first two days, but no one can play singles more than twice during the tournament.
At least four of the six players on each team must participate in doubles. No pair of players can compete in doubles more than once, except in the event of a tiebreaking “decider” match on the final day.
