Lamont Roach Jr., the current WBA junior lightweight champion, is preparing for the biggest fight of his career against Gervonta “Tank” Davis this March. While other opportunities were on the table, Roach ultimately chose Davis, believing this matchup could be the pivotal moment in his boxing legacy.
“When people ask if I jumped at this opportunity, I tell them I didn’t take it immediately. I had other offers,” Roach revealed at a press conference in Washington, D.C. “But I’m a competitor, and I feel like I’m the best, so I’m going to show it.”
A fight with high stakes and higher rewards
Roach’s decision was driven by more than just the allure of facing one of boxing’s biggest names. He saw the potential to elevate his career to legendary status. “It’s a whole lotta upside,” Roach explained. “When I win, this shit’s gonna flip all the way over. I set out to be a legend in this sport, and this fight starts my legendary run.”
Financial incentives also played a role, as Roach acknowledged the lucrative deal attached to the fight. Beyond the immediate payday, there’s a contractual rematch clause, offering a chance to double down on the opportunity. “Obviously, the money is nice. But it’s also about building my brand and setting up my son’s future,” Roach said.
Gervonta Davis: a career-defining challenge
Facing Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight titleholder, will be no small task. Davis, known for his knockout power and explosive style, presents the toughest challenge Roach has faced. However, Roach is unfazed, having worked tirelessly to reach this point in his career. “I worked my ass off to get right here,” Roach said. “So it’s about time.”
While Davis was initially exploring other opponents like Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela, circumstances aligned to make Roach the clear choice. Valenzuela’s calendar was filled, and Isaac Cruz pursued other fights, clearing the path for Roach to step into the spotlight.
A victory against Davis could propel Roach into the upper echelon of boxing, with opportunities to unify titles and cement his place among the sport’s greats. For Roach, this fight isn’t just another match it’s a legacy in the making.
