Lamine Yamal misses penalty as Barcelona falls behind Real Madrid in title race

FC Barcelona enters a crisis that could leave them empty-handed this season. In their LaLiga match against Girona, they suffered a painful 2-1 defeat – their fourth loss of the campaign – allowing Real Madrid to pull ahead at the top of the table.

Girona found themselves trailing after a goal from Pau Cubarsí in a first half full of chances, including a missed penalty by Lamine Yamal that would have completely changed the story of the game.

Thomas Lemar, the player trying to revive his career, equalized for the home side in the 62nd minute – just three minutes after Barcelona’s goal – while Fran Beltrán sealed the victory for Girona in the 87th minute. Joan García was the standout for the visitors, preventing a much heavier scoreline.

With this result, Girona ends a three-game winless streak and gains vital points that move them five points clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Barcelona now trails Real Madrid by two points in the LaLiga title race.

Hansi Flick‘s team faces a long week ahead: they don’t play again until Sunday against Levante, before closing out the month with a LaLiga clash against Villarreal. March will be decisive for their remaining chances in other competitions.
