Lakers’ mishandling of LeBron James saga is putting Luka Doncic’s future with the team in jeopardy

Luka Doncic’s arrival to the Los Angeles Lakers came surrounded by questions-questions that have yet to be answered. Ever since his signing, speculation has swirled around how his presence might influence LeBron James’ decision to stay or leave the team. And the rumors haven’t stopped since.

Now, Doncic is facing the possibility of signing a four-year, $229 million contract extension with the Lakers. However, several analysts believe that the negotiation process could face complications.

If Luka signs, he would be locked in with the team through the 2029-2030 season. Should he choose to extend his deal beginning August 2, when he officially becomes eligible, he could also opt for a shorter, three-year agreement, earning slightly less but gaining flexibility.

That path would allow him to renegotiate one year before the end of the deal, potentially securing a much more lucrative contract at that time.

On the other hand, Doncic could choose not to extend his contract now and continue playing under the terms of his current five-year, $215 million deal, which runs through the 2025-2026 season. After that, he would have the option to opt out and test free agency.

This is a stress max right now for Luka. The Lakers are a little bit stressed out about it. If he signs it, relief for the Lakers… If he does not sign it, he can be a free agent next summer when there are going to be 10-plus teams with cap space. You will see teams begin to open up maneuvers to try to chase Luka.

Said Brian Windhorst on the July 15 edition of NBA Today.

If Luka keeps the door to free agency open, it creates additional pressure for the Lakers, similar to what they experienced recently with LeBron James. Though James’ situation differs, as he’s nearing 41 and no longer seen as the player around whom a team should be built. His retirement is approaching.

Doncic’s case is quite different. He’s young, successful, and clearly the type of player around whom a franchise should build.

Now the Lakers are juggling two major concerns involving their two biggest stars. They must keep Luka engaged while also managing James’ situation to avoid a total collapse. With summer in full swing, the clock is ticking for the Lakers to solidify their core and move forward with clarity.

I think the way the Lakers screwed up the Dorian Finney-Smith thing is potentially troubling, and I think the way the Lakers are not so subtly dissing LeBron James about how excited they are to be done with [him] – I can’t imagine Luka is happy about that… I would have said it’s 95% that Luka will re-sign this summer. I now will say it’s 75%. I would say it is not a lock.

Said Fox Sports’ Nick Wright.

The reality is clear: the Lakers must get their stars aligned. Fast. Deciding what happens with LeBron James is the first step in ending the speculation and moving forward with a clear team-building strategy.
