Lakers’ Luka Doncic sparks MVP buzz, forces NBA star to backtrack on bold claim

Doubting Luka Doncic is quickly becoming a losing argument as the Los Angeles Lakers continue their strong push through March. The superstar guard has elevated his play at a crucial point in the season, delivering dominant performances that are impossible to overlook-and even harder to criticize.

One of the more notable skeptics was former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins, who earlier in the month downplayed Doncic‘s case for First-Team All-NBA honors.

Cousins believed that players like Cade Cunningham, Jaylen Brown, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had stronger arguments, pointing to team success as a deciding factor. At the time, he placed Doncic firmly on the second team.

That stance didn’t last long.

Dominant stretch forces a reconsideration

Everything changed following the Lakers’ March 19 matchup against the Miami Heat, when Doncic delivered one of the most electrifying performances of the season.

In the aftermath, Cousins took to social media to admit he had misjudged the situation, acknowledging that Doncic now deserves First-Team recognition without question.

“Yea I was wrong asf!! Luca (sic) 1st team without a doubt and also time to have some real convo about MVP this season cause sheeeessshh!! This version of the lakers is a scary team come playoffs!,” wrote Cousins.

The reversal was driven by Doncic‘s extraordinary production under demanding circumstances. Entering the game listed as questionable and playing on the second night of a back-to-back, he still logged heavy minutes and took control offensively.

Doncic erupted for 60 points, shooting with remarkable efficiency while contributing across the stat sheet with rebounds and defensive plays.

What makes this stretch particularly impressive is that it wasn’t an isolated performance. Just one night earlier, Doncic had already delivered another standout outing, scoring 40 points while recording a double-double.

He also came within a rebound of a triple-double, showcasing his all-around influence on the game. The back-to-back efforts underscored his ability to maintain elite production even under physical strain.

Cousins‘ public change of opinion reflects a larger shift in perception across the league. Doncic is not only putting up eye-catching numbers, but he’s doing so in meaningful games as the Lakers build momentum toward the postseason. His leadership and consistency are turning Los Angeles into a formidable contender at the right time.
