Lakers hit with double injury concern as Austin Reaves scare follows Luka Doncic blow

The mood around the Los Angeles Lakers has shifted quickly from confidence to concern, as what looked like a late-season surge is now clouded by uncertainty surrounding two of their most important players.

Just as the team begins to process the loss of Luka Doncic to a hamstring injury, attention has turned to Austin Reaves, whose availability is now in doubt after he underwent imaging on a rib and oblique issue sustained in the same game.

For a Lakers side sitting third in the Western Conference with a 50-27 record, the timing could hardly be worse.

Reaves suffered the injury during Thursday’s 139-96 defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder, briefly leaving before returning to finish the game. But lingering discomfort prompted further evaluation, and the team is still awaiting clarity on the severity of the issue.

While Doncic‘s absence was always going to reshape the Lakers‘ short-term outlook, Reaves‘ situation introduces a new level of concern.

The 27 year old has been one of the breakout performers of the season, stepping into a primary offensive role and delivering career-best numbers across the board.

Averaging 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds, Reaves has become more than just a supporting piece. He has been essential to how the Lakers function offensively.

His ability to create shots, stretch the floor and relieve pressure on Doncic has made him a central figure in the team’s late-season push. Losing him, even temporarily, would leave the Lakers without two of their most reliable playmakers.

Head coach JJ Redick suggested the injury is “more intercostal, rib, oblique than it is back,” while also acknowledging that further imaging was needed after an initial scan failed to target the correct area. That delay has only added to the uncertainty.

The injuries come on the back of a defeat that raised questions of its own. The blowout loss to Oklahoma City was not just a bad night. It exposed some of the Lakers‘ underlying vulnerabilities, particularly on the defensive end.

Speaking on ESPN, Kendrick Perkins pointed to the bigger picture when evaluating the team’s future.

“Those two guys cannot be your franchise guys taking up majority of your dollars and take you to the Promised Land,” Perkins said, referring to the potential long-term pairing of Doncic and Reaves.

Stephen A. Smith offered a slightly different perspective, noting that Reaves‘ rise has at least given the franchise flexibility moving forward.

“He would command a lot if you’re the Los Angeles Lakers,” Smith said. “You’ve got a commodity that you could go and get big-time assets in return for.”

Playoff positioning now under threat

For now, however, those long-term debates are secondary. The Lakers are focused on navigating the final stretch of the regular season without losing their footing in the standings.

A game against the Dallas Mavericks looms, and Los Angeles may have to approach it without both Doncic and Reaves. That scenario would test the depth of a roster that had looked increasingly cohesive during a recent 13-1 run.

The margin for error is slim. With only a handful of games remaining, maintaining the No. 3 seed could be crucial in shaping a more favorable playoff path.

Waiting on answers at the worst time

What makes the situation particularly difficult is the lack of immediate clarity. While Doncic‘s timeline is more defined, Reaves‘ status remains uncertain, leaving the Lakers in a holding pattern at a pivotal moment in their season.

For a team that had begun to look like a genuine contender in the Western Conference, the challenge now is less about potential and more about resilience.

The next update on Reaves may ultimately determine whether the Lakers enter the postseason with momentum, or with mounting questions.
