Lakers’ defensive woes put Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura in the hot seat

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves at a critical juncture, searching for answers on the defensive end as losses mount and mounting frustration echoes from media to the locker room.

After a promising start to the season, the Lakers‘ defense has evaporated in recent weeks, underscoring the need for a reset that begins with communication, effort and hard accountability from stars and role players alike.

Lakers center Deandre Ayton and forward Rui Hachimura addressed the team’s defensive struggles, signaling that the locker room is well aware of what needs to change.

According to ESPN‘s Dave McMenamin, both players emphasized accountability, effort, and focus as the Lakers prepare to host the Sacramento Kings.

Ayton, who is expected to be the backbone of the Lakers‘ interior defense, spoke about leadership as much as positioning and rim protection.

“Holding my guys accountable, especially starting with me,” Ayton said.

“No matter how the game is going, we stick to our principles no matter what. This is how we’re going to play on defense, hard and with second efforts.”

He added, “It’s really just communication and accountability out there, that we’re trying to emphasize,” describing how the defense has suffered from inconsistency and players feeling each other out rather than operating as a disciplined unit.

Those principles have not always been evident in recent games. The Lakers have struggled to contain dribble penetration, rotate consistently, and finish possessions with defensive rebounds.

Opponents have taken advantage, particularly in transition and late-clock situations, areas where communication often breaks down.

Defensive urgency growing as losses mount

Hachimura echoed Ayton‘s message, but framed it through the lens of energy and physicality. “I have to be more focused on bringing the energy, being physical,” Hachimura said. “That kind of stuff is going to help.”

Statistically, the Lakers‘ defensive profile places them squarely in the middle of the NBA.

Entering Sunday’s matchup, they rank 10th in opponents’ points per game at 112.2 and 15th in defensive rating at 114.7, according to league data tracked by NBA.com. Those numbers reflect a team that is not disastrous defensively, but far from elite.

Recent performances, however, suggest a troubling downward trend. Over the past four games, Los Angeles surrendered a season-high 135 points to the Utah Jazz on December 18, followed by 132 points allowed against the Phoenix Suns on December 23.

Both games featured extended stretches where the Lakers struggled to get stops, even after made baskets.

Around the league, analysts have pointed out that defensive consistency is often tied to effort rather than scheme.

ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins recently noted that veteran teams can fall into bad habits during the regular season, relying too heavily on scoring to compensate for defensive lapses.

That critique has applied to the Lakers during this skid, as missed assignments and slow rotations have repeatedly punished them.

The upcoming game against Sacramento offers an immediate test. The Kings are known for their pace and ball movement, forcing defenses to communicate and recover quickly.

For Ayton and Hachimura, this matchup presents a chance to turn words into action and stabilize a team that cannot afford to slide further in a competitive Western Conference.
