Lakers beat Raptors, Lebron’s streak ends, Hachimura shocks at endgame

The Los Angeles Lakers arrived in Toronto still feeling the frustration of their loss to the Phoenix Suns and facing what looked like a brutal stretch on the schedule. With Luka Doncic and Marcus Smart unavailable, their road trip suddenly felt a lot heavier, especially against a Raptors team that has surprised almost everyone this season.

Even so, the Lakers opened the night with sharp energy. Austin Reaves, who has become the team’s go-to spark plug when others are out, hit two quick threes and found Deandre Ayton inside to help L.A. grab an early lead. Jake LaRavia added a three of his own off the bench, and by the end of the first quarter the Lakers were up 31 to 26 despite Brandon Ingram’s early scoring burst for Toronto.

The second quarter brought more unexpected contributions. Adou Thiero made immediate noise with hustle plays and a three point play. LeBron James struggled to find rhythm early but finally scored on a driving layup. Reaves then returned and helped steady the offense before halftime, sending the Lakers to the break up 67 to 58.

Reaves erupts, game tightens, and the finish turns wild

Toronto fought back quickly in the third quarter. Although Reaves kept L.A. afloat with another scoring surge, the Raptors managed to tie the game. A midrange shot from Rui Hachimura offered brief relief, but a Flagrant 1 on Gabe Vincent swung momentum back to Toronto.

Reaves responded with his most explosive quarter of the season. Circus shots, tough finishes and complete takeover energy led to 22 points in the third alone. The Lakers entered the fourth with a narrow 100 to 98 lead.

Once Reaves sat, the offense cooled. James, Hachimura and Vincent struggled to connect while Ingram continued to push Toronto back into the game. Reaves returned despite taking a shot to the face from Ingram, and although he kept scoring, the Raptors took a two point lead on a late three point play.

James tied the game with a strong layup in the final minute. Ingram answered again, setting the stage for a tense final possession. Instead of forcing up the two points he needed to extend his double digit scoring streak, James found an open Hachimura in the corner.

Hachimura buried the three at the buzzer. Lakers 123, Raptors 120

LeBron finished with eight points, ending his NBA record streak of 1,297 consecutive double digit games, a run that began in 2007 and has long been recognized as one of the league’s most unbreakable consistency marks.

Reaves closed the night with 44 points and 11 assists, a performance that echoed the kind of takeover nights he produced last season.

The Lakers now turn to a tough back to back in Boston before closing the road trip against the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday.
