LAFC humbled at home by surprising Austin FC side: Highlights and best moments

LAFC suffered a painful defeat at home against Austin FC in Week 4 of the 2025 Major League Soccer season. The Black & Gold hosted the Texas-based team at BMO Stadium, expecting to secure three points, but Los Verdes had other plans.

With this victory, Austin FC overtakes LAFC in the Western Conference standings, adding pressure on Steve Cherundolo’s squad.

A rough start for LAFC

The match started poorly for the home side, as Austin FC struck first in the 11th minute. Owen Wolff delivered a well-placed corner kick from the right side, and Guilherme Biro rose above the defense to head the ball past Hugo Lloris. The French goalkeeper had no chance to stop the powerful effort, giving the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Later in the first half, LAFC tried to respond through Cengiz Ünder, who unleashed a promising shot that went just wide of Brad Stuver’s goal. Despite their attempts, the Black & Gold struggled to break down Austin’s solid defensive structure, ending the first 45 minutes behind on the scoreboard.

Missed chances and frustration

In the second half, Myrto Uzuni had two golden opportunities to extend Austin FC’s lead. First, he attempted an inside-foot shot that Lloris saved comfortably. Then, he fired a left-footed effort that sailed over the stands of BMO Stadium.

LAFC’s most dangerous moment came when Denis Bouanga unleashed a powerful strike, but Stuver reacted brilliantly to deny him. Despite dominating possession, LAFC couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed.

A nightmare week for LAFC

Although LAFC advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals earlier in the week, their journey wasn’t easy. They barely survived against Columbus Crew, needing a stoppage-time goal from Bouanga in the 96th minute to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory.

This latest MLS defeat drops LAFC to sixth place in the Western Conference, and their standing could worsen depending on other Week 4 results. While the season is still young, Cherundolo’s team has plenty to improve if they want to maintain their reputation as one of the league’s top contenders.
