Kyren Lacy’s agent issues scathing statement criticizing the NFL in the wake of his client’s death

The football world is still coming to the grips with the untimely death of LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy, who died by suicide on April 12, 2025, in Harris County, Texas.

The 24-year-old was involved in a police pursuit when he reportedly took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound before crashing his car. Authorities had been searching for Lacy following a domestic disturbance where a firearm was allegedly discharged.

Legal troubles clouded his future

Lacy’s death came just days before a scheduled grand jury hearing regarding a tragic December 2024 car crash. The collision claimed the life of 78-year-old Herman Hall and resulted in Lacy being charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving.

His attorney, Matthew Ory, publicly stated his belief that the charges would have ultimately been dropped, asserting that key details exonerating Lacy were overlooked.

These legal proceedings severely impacted Lacy’s football trajectory. Once considered a second or third-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, Lacy was barred from attending the NFL Combine due to the ongoing investigation.

The decision drew harsh criticism from his agent, Rocky Arceneaux, who condemned the NFL for prematurely judging the athlete. In a heartfelt statement, Arceneaux called on the league to reevaluate its draft process and respect due process.

“To the NFL, shame on you for revoking Kyren’s Combine invitation without acknowledgement or consideration of the facts. I urge you to re-evaluate your procecces and provide athletes with the necessary due process before alienating them from their peers and dreams they’ve worked so hard for,” said Arceneaux.

Lacy had transferred from Louisiana Tech to LSU in 2022, quickly making his mark with consistent performances. Over his final two seasons, he tallied more than 1,100 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, showcasing the athleticism and consistency that made him a standout on the field.

His death has left the sports community grappling with more than just a loss of talent. It has reignited conversations about the mental health challenges faced by young athletes and the systemic pressures that can compound personal struggles. Friends, family, and fans continue to mourn both the tragic loss of Kyren Lacy and the unanswered questions surrounding the events that led to his death.
