Kylian Mbappé wants to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo and is going for his idol’s record with Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappé is having a great time at Real Madrid, so much so that he is going for a historic record that belonged to the club’s icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, for more than a decade.

The current Al Nassr captain shone for nine seasons, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer and winning numerous titles and records. But one of them may change hands.

Mbappé is going for CR7’s record

Kylian and Real Madrid are coming off a 2-1 victory against Alavés, thanks to Kylian’s goal in the 24th minute and Rodrygo Goes’s equalizer in the 76th minute. Their opponents’ lone goal was scored by Carlos Vicente Robles in the 68th minute. This win not only ended a two-game losing streak but also brought the French striker closer to an incredible record.

Mbappé had just made history thanks to his goals. In the 1-1 draw against Girona, with a penalty goal from Kylian Mbappé in the 67th minute, ‘Kiki’ entered a prestigious list.

His 53 goals for his club and another seven for the French national team at that point put him alongside Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only four players to score 60 goals in a single year.

Now, with three more, Mbappé is looking to continue breaking records. With 56 goals scored this year, Kylian needs at least three more to reach the 59 that Cristiano scored in 2013 and four to surpass him.

However, time could be against him: there are only two games left before the end of the year. His first opportunity will be in the Copa del Rey against Talavera on Wednesday, December 17. Then, Real Madrid and Mbappé will face Sevilla on matchday 18 of La Liga on Saturday, December 20, at home at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi holds the highest record: he scored 79 goals in 2012 with Barcelona (91 if we add his goals with the Argentine national team).

Will Kylian reach this mark?
