Kyler Murray backed amid renewed work ethic debate

Questions surrounding Kyler Murray‘s professionalism have followed him throughout much of his NFL career, but a former teammate has now stepped forward to defend the quarterback as he prepares for a fresh start with the Minnesota Vikings.

Before arriving in Minnesota on a short-term deal, Kyler Murray spent six seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where his immense talent was often contrasted with persistent concerns about his preparation and leadership.

Those doubts resurfaced again this offseason, fueled by commentary from analysts and former players who questioned whether Murray possessed the consistency required to thrive at the highest level.

However, Chase Edmonds, who shared a locker room with Murray from 2019 to 2021, has firmly rejected those claims.

Speaking recently, Edmonds offered a direct rebuttal to critics who have questioned the quarterback’s commitment.

“Look, I have never once questioned Kyler Murray’s work ethic,” Edmonds explained. “I know the work he puts in day in and day out to be prepared at the highest level. You know Kyler. You know his dad’s (high expectations).”

Edmonds’ comments arrive amid a broader debate that has lingered since Murray signed a lucrative extension with Arizona in 2022.

At the time, reports of a controversial study clause in his contract intensified scrutiny over his habits.

Later, unnamed sources and analysts, including Shaun King and Louis Riddick, added to the narrative by questioning his “commitment” and long-term leadership qualities.

Despite those critiques, Edmonds suggested that responsibility for Murray’s early development was not solely on the player himself.

“When Kyler was younger, I do think he could have been helped, put in better positions, to really understand the grind it may take to play the quarterback position,” Edmonds said.

“I do. But I don’t think that’s all on him, bro. To me, that’s from the top of the organization on down.”

A fresh opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings

Now with the Minnesota Vikings, Kyler Murray finds himself at a pivotal moment in his career.

The former No. 1 overall pick is expected to compete with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy for the starting role, creating one of the more intriguing position battles heading into the 2026 season.

For Murray, the move represents more than just a change of scenery, it is a chance to redefine his narrative.

Injuries and inconsistency plagued his later years in Arizona, and the team’s struggles ultimately led to significant organizational changes, including the departure of head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Edmonds believes those challenges may ultimately benefit Murray moving forward.

“For the Minnesota fans, I would just say that they are going to get the best version of Kyler Murray, one the NFL has not seen,” Edmonds added.

“When Kyler Murray first entered the NFL, he never experienced adversity. When you finally experience that adversity this late in your career? This version of Kyler, he’s going to be more motivated than he’s ever been in his entire life.”

The Vikings, led by head coach Kevin O’Connell, are widely regarded as a more structured and quarterback-friendly environment.

O’Connell’s track record of developing passers could prove crucial in helping Murray refine his game and silence lingering doubts.

Ultimately, the coming season will likely define how Kyler Murray is remembered. If he performs to his potential, the narrative surrounding his work ethic may finally shift.

If not, the criticisms that have followed him since his early days with the Arizona Cardinals will only grow louder.

For now, at least, he has one former teammate firmly in his corner.
