From joy to misery in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. That was Kyle Teel‘s experience in the game in which Italy defeated the United States 8-6. He went from being the most exciting player to the one who caused the most concern due to injury.
Teel led an early offensive against the Americans by hitting a solo home run off Nolan McLean in the second inning. He then walked in the fourth and doubled in the sixth.
Later, the White Sox catcher was injured while running the bases at Daikin Park. As he slid into second after his hard-earned double, Teel winced in pain. He pounded the ground in frustration as he sensed it was serious.
It was confirmed to be a right hamstring strain. Italy manager Francisco Cervelli said the team will have to replace the catcher on the roster with Andres Annunziata.
He is one of my receivers in Italy. He’s the only one we have. He’s been working hard with us. I think he’s the one because we don’t have anyone else

Selected with the 14th overall pick in the 2023 Draft by the Red Sox, Teel was an important piece in the return the White Sox received in the trade that sent Garrett Crochet to Boston.
- In his first experience in the major leagues last year, Teel posted a .273/.375/.411 slash line with eight home runs and 11 doubles in 78 games.
Why did Teel choose Italy?
The catcher is a native of New Jersey. He is American-born, but decided to join the Italian team after resorting to the option of eligibility rules that allow him to represent another nation if he has roots
His family has Italian ancestry, so he met the requirement to join the European roster and compete with that jersey in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
