Knicks Jalen Brunson day dreaming winning shot as a kid shows he knew the day was coming

Jalen Brunson has been the heart and soul of the New York Knicks since his arrival three seasons ago, leading them to the playoffs each year and showing no signs of slowing down. Last night Brunson delivered a masterful performance, securing a 116-113 victory over the Detroit Pistons in Game 6 with a clutch game-winning shot. His 40-point outburst tied him with Knicks legend Bernard King for the most 40-point playoff games in franchise history, both with seven. The win sent the Knicks to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the third consecutive season, a feat not accomplished since the late 1990s.

Now they face a daunting challenge from the Boston Celtics, who swept them in all four regular-season meetings this year. The Knicks are determined to dethrone the defending champions and reach the conference finals for the first time since 2000, and their physical style, which mirrors Orlando’s tough first-round battle against Boston, gives them a fighting chance.

A Childhood Vision Captured on Video

A nostalgic video from Brunson’s childhood surfaced showing a young Jalen practicing a game-winning shot on an outdoor court, as if he always knew moments like the one against the Pistons were in his future. In the clip, a childlike Brunson dribbles deliberately, mimicking a high-stakes scenario, before launching a shot with confidence. Practice makes perfect, and the video clearly illustrates how Brunson has honed his skills for high-pressure situations. Let’s not forget – Brunson was the 2018 National College Player of the Year at Villanova, where he also won two championships, so the spotlight is nothing new to him.

He was born for it, which is why he left Dallas, where he played in the shadow of Luka Doncic, to become the centerpiece of the Knicks. It’s no surprise that he’s this year’s Clutch Player of the Year-when the Knicks need a bucket, everyone on the court knows Brunson will have the ball, yet he remains nearly unstoppable, as he proved against Detroit.

In his three seasons in New York, Brunson has averaged 26.4 points and 6.7 assists per game, cementing his role as the team’s leader. He’s also the remaining leading scorer in the playoffs now that Giannis Antetoukompo is out, and many believe he could take his talents to the Big Apple this offseason.

Brunson’s Growing Legacy in the Big Apple

In a short time, Brunson has established himself as one of the top 10 players in Knicks history, a remarkable feat for a franchise with such a storied past. But in a demanding metropolitan market, fans are hungry for more-they want a trip to the conference finals, something the Knicks haven’t accomplished since 2000. If Brunson can lead the team past the reigning champions and title favorites, the Boston Celtics, his legend in New York will soar to new heights.

The Knicks are built to compete at this level for at least the next couple of seasons, with a core featuring Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Brunson as the standout stars. The upcoming series against Boston will be their ultimate test, and while the challenge is steep, it’s not out of reach. The Knicks’ ability to match the physicality of Orlando, who gave the Celtics a run for their money in the first round, could be the key to pulling off an upset.

Brunson’s journey from a kid dreaming of game-winners to delivering them on the NBA’s biggest stage is a testament to his work ethic and destiny. The video of his childhood practice isn’t just a cute throwback – it’s proof that he’s been preparing for these moments his whole life. As the Knicks prepare to take on the Celtics, Brunson’s poise under pressure will be their greatest asset. New York fans dream of a deep playoff run, and with Brunson leading the charge, that dream feels closer than it has in decades.
