Klay Thompson did not expect to find himself in this position when he joined the Dallas Mavericks last summer. After his arrival, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were left out of the team.
After tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and undergoing surgery, Irving will likely not return to the court until early 2026. Meanwhile, Doncic now plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. Despite this, the 35-year-old star was not discouraged.
Thompson “excited” for the upcoming season
Of course, fighting for a championship alongside the duo was not beyond Klay’s dreams, but he has managed to maintain his enthusiasm for a new NBA season.
In conversation with ‘Showtime With Michael Cooper Lakers Podcast‘, Thompson highlighted the virtues of the team and its players, stating that Anthony Davis “is the best power forward, maybe of my generation.”
He also highlighted a new role he is willing to fulfill on the team that he did not have with the Golden State Warriors: that of vocal leadership.
“I never thought I would be in Dallas, but it’s been an awesome transition. I’m the oldest guy on the team, it’s crazy how quickly that happens. I gotta lead these guys with my voice,” Klay began.
“I never really did that back in Golden State, so now I have a different calling to use my championship knowledge and show these guys it’s a journey.”
Even though it’s only August, with this enthusiasm and his new role on the team, Thompson can already see his future and place with the Mavericks: “So, I’m really excited. I’m actually gonna go to the gym now. I haven’t been this motivated in years.”

In addition, the Dallas star recently went public with his relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. In early July, she shared a photo of the NBA player on Instagram, and the following week they went out to dinner in New York and made their debut as a couple at the inaugural Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in NY, organized to support disadvantaged communities in Houston.
There, the two arrived holding hands and kissed on the carpet while posing for the cameras, putting an end to rumors about their relationship.
The singer said she had “never dated someone so kind” and that “this is her first relationship where she is with someone who is truly a good person and makes her truly happy.”
As if that weren’t enough, they also share interests and even workout sessions. Without a doubt, Klay is going through a motivating time in his life.
