Klay Thompson’s stint with the Dallas Mavericks has not unfolded as expected. In one and a half seasons, the 15-year veteran has struggled to make a significant impact. With the trade deadline approaching, speculation about his potential departure is intensifying.
Thompson joined the Mavericks ahead of the 2024-25 season on a three-year, $50 million deal as part of a historic six-team trade.
In his first season with Dallas, the star guard averaged 14 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2 assists. This year, his numbers have dipped to 11.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists-well below his career averages.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks failed to reach the playoffs last season and currently sit 12th in the Western Conference. Given the team’s struggles, Thompson is reportedly reassessing his future.
Is Thompson ready to leave Dallas?
On a recent episode of The Mavs Pulse Podcast, insider Grant Afseth noted that Thompson joined the Mavericks in pursuit of another championship. With the team stuck near the bottom of the standings, he may now be considering a trade.
“Would you like to go to a team that can potentially win a title and one you could contribute to?” Afseth asked, speculating about Thompson’s mindset.
Still, a move won’t be simple. “The problem is they have some contracts that are tough to move, like Caleb Martin and Jaden Hardy,” Afseth explained.
Neither Martin nor Hardy are consistent starters in Jason Kidd’s rotation, and their multimillion-dollar deals make them difficult trade pieces. That complicates any potential exit for Thompson.
Could Thompson return to Golden State?
If Thompson does seek a trade, several destinations could be in play-including his former team, the Golden State Warriors.
Analysts such as Jeff Teague of the Club 520 Podcast believe a reunion would benefit both sides. The Warriors would gain a much-needed boost this season, while Thompson could rediscover his rhythm alongside longtime teammate Stephen Curry.
