Kirk Cousins’ future is one of the biggest questions heading into the 2026 NFL season. After a strong run with the Atlanta Falcons, the veteran quarterback is awaiting his next opportunity-potentially with the Miami Dolphins or a return to the Minnesota Vikings.
Cousins joined Atlanta in 2024 after leaving Minnesota. His first season was underwhelming, and in 2025, he was relegated to backup behind second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
However, an injury to Penix reopened the door for Cousins, who delivered solid numbers in eight starts:
- 166 completions on 269 attempts
- 61.7% completion rate
- 1,721 passing yards
- 10 touchdowns
- 5 interceptions
- 84.8 passer rating
Despite this, analysts expect Atlanta to move on from the 13-year veteran, leaving Miami and Minnesota as his most likely destinations.
The Dolphins could be the perfect fit
The Dolphins endured a disappointing 2025 season. Neither starter Tua Tagovailoa nor rookie Quinn Ewers managed to spark the offense, and the team finished with a 7-10 record.
Reports suggest Miami is ready to part ways with Tagovailoa, opening the door for Cousins. ESPN insider Ben Solak explained:
“The Dolphins’ roster construction will likely mirror that of Seattle’s under Mike McDonald. They’ll build an elite defense, then cycle through midtier quarterbacks trying to strike gold.”
Solak also advised Miami’s front office not to trade away draft picks, emphasizing the need for rookie-contract players to strengthen the depth chart.
Could Cousins return to Minnesota?
While Miami appears to be a strong option, Cousins could also reunite with the Vikings.
“I like the Dolphins as a Kirk Cousins team, but if he prefers Minnesota, it’s tough to find better options,” Solak admitted.
He noted that Cousins is a natural fit given his familiarity with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system. However, O’Connell may prefer to focus on developing younger talent, particularly second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
