Kevin Stefanski is ready to trade one of Browns’ star players, leaving Shedeur Sanders with less chances of success

The Browns’ offseason hasn’t just been about the quarterback battle, it’s also included scandals and a bit of trade talk. According to reports, Cleveland’s head coach Kevin Stefanski is open to trading David Njoku.

Njoku remains a cornerstone of the franchise. Despite playing only 11 games last season due to injury, he still managed 64 catches on 97 targets, his second best production behind only his 2023 Pro Bowl season.

The tight end is entering the final year of his contract, and there’s uncertainty about whether the Browns will re-sign him.

Njoku’s current situation

ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi noted that Njoku, though still just 29, is coming off an injury year. “On the Browns’ side, they might want to see him bounce back and get to that Pro Bowl form before they give him a big extension.”

On The Ken Carman Show, Browns insider Zac Jackson put it plainly: “In theory, did they draft his replacement in Harold Fannin? Yes.”

Njoku’s possible trade

Lattter, Jackson acknowledged Njoku’s talent and role, but like the QB room there is also uncertainty on many other positions: “Can David Njoku be an explosive and consistent player? Sure. Like I said, I will not be surprised if he’s the leading receiver and at least the leading target guy because they’ve long believed that you don’t have to get David Njoku a complicated route so you can get him the ball and let him create, but he’s got to be available and he’s got to produce when those chances come.”

Meanwhile, Jarrett Bailey predicted a potential trade destination: “Because of the dreadful options at quarterback, the Browns will likely be out of the playoff hunt before the trade deadline, which could lead to the franchise off-loading stars in exchange for draft picks.”

Huge loss for QB room

Njoku’s departure from the Cleveland Browns could be a huge blow to the team’s offense, no matter whether Shedeur Sanders, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, or Kenny Pickett is starting.

Despite playing in only 11 games last season, Njoku still ranked third on the Browns in receiving yards and led the team’s tight ends in receptions, targets, and receiving yards.

If the Browns want any chance of competing for a playoff spot, they should retain Njoku.
