Training camp is underway for the Cleveland Browns, and it continues to be a soap opera with new chapters unfolding each day. However, one thing remains unchanged – the case of Shedeur Sanders, who continues to be the last option for Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, and it looks like that’s not going to change.
The situation for Shedeur Sanders is very complicated. He was once considered a potential first-round pick, but perhaps due to the media circus surrounding him, NFL teams passed him over. The team that ultimately gave him a chance, selecting him in the fifth round, was the Cleveland Browns – who had already taken Dillon Gabriel, quarterback from the Oregon Ducks, two rounds earlier.
Before the Draft, the Browns had already signed Kenny Pickett, acquired via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, and later added Joe Flacco. And although they’re trying to make it seem like there’s a real battle for the starting job, the true competition is between the experienced players – Pickett and Flacco.
Kevin Stefanski is only focused on Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel, according to insiders
Betting sites have released odds on who will be the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback, and at this point, the favorite is still Joe Flacco. However, in recent weeks, several insiders have revealed that the current preference is leaning toward Kenny Pickett.
According to The Escapist, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit analyzed that Kevin Stefanski is not interested in Shedeur Sanders and that the quarterback competition is really coming down to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel.
“Camp hasn’t even started, and in one report I read, [Shedeur Sanders] looks like he should start. But then you realize he’s only playing with the younger guys, and he’s still in a developmental stage. That’s pretty common for a draft pick. It takes time to make that adjustment. My guess would be he makes the team, but he’s more in a developmental role.”
It’s not surprising when it comes to Shedeur Sanders – but what is surprising is that Joe Flacco seems to be losing ground. Let’s remember that in 2023, Flacco led the Browns to the playoffs with four wins in their final five games. He’s also the only one who knows Cleveland’s current offensive system. Still, these are all just rumors – and in the end, only Kevin Stefanski has the final word and the real answer.
