Who would have imagined it? Before the Draft, everything was looking good for Shedeur Sanders. He was a quarterback that both he and his family (Deion Sanders) wanted to market as a highly sought-after player, and many believed he had the talent to be a first-round pick. But it didn’t happen, and his path in the NFL has started with many obstacles.
Shedeur Sanders expected to enter the NFL as a star coming from the NCAA after throwing 37 touchdown passes in his final year playing for the Colorado Buffaloes. However, teams shut the door on him, and the only one that opened it was the Browns – but not until the fifth round with pick number 144.
Sanders was the sixth quarterback selected, and ironically, the team that took him had already selected Dillon Gabriel from the University of Oregon two rounds earlier. So today, on the Browns’ roster, the quarterback who expected to enter as a star is the fourth option out of four, and his future looks very uncertain.
Dillon Gabriel is the only one who can compete with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, according to insider reports
The QB1 position for the Cleveland Browns is completely up for grabs, according to Head Coach Kevin Stefanski. However, betting odds show the heavy favorite to start is Joe Flacco, age 40, who is entering his 18th NFL season and is the only one with experience in Stefanski’s system.
Everything could change – the Cleveland Browns are a real mystery – and according to Judy Battista of NFL Network, the Browns are focused on developing Dillon Gabriel, whom they see as having the talent to compete with the veterans.
“The Browns have already given Gabriel, their third-round rookie, increased reps after being impressed with his processing speed early on. That’s a particularly notable trait that could continue to win him favor with the coaching staff, especially since processing speed and decision-making will be key in naming the starter,” Battista reported.
Decision-making is vital in a league like the NFL, and according to pre-Draft reports, Shedeur Sanders was not known for that trait, which may have been one of the main reasons he fell in the Draft – and potentially why his NFL career could already be in jeopardy.
