Kevin Durant discusses retirement plans and shocks fans

Kevin Durant has made it clear: his sights are set on a long-term future with the Houston Rockets.

After discovering that the Phoenix Suns attempted to trade him to the Golden State Warriors, the 37-year-old superstar expressed a strong desire to retire as a Rocket.

This announcement comes at a compelling time, with the 2025-26 season marking the final year of Durant’s current contract.

Durant’s final season with the Suns was impressive by any standard. He averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, shooting an outstanding 52.7 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the arc.

These elite numbers speak volumes, especially for a player nearing 37 years old. His goal now is to replicate or even surpass this level of play while leading the Rockets.

“That’s the intent,” Durant said regarding his plans with Houston. “I know, I said that about Phoenix, too, but that’s the intent. I would love to do that.”

Though Durant hasn’t announced a definite retirement timeline, he has expressed a desire to play as long as his body permits.

Given advances in sports medicine and conditioning, it’s reasonable to expect Durant could extend his career for several more years in Houston.

Building toward a lasting legacy in Houston

The blockbuster trade that brought Durant to Houston was not just about immediate impact; it signaled a strategic pivot for the Rockets.

Houston sent promising talents like Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, along with the 10th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft and multiple future second-round picks, to Phoenix.

This deal shows that the Rockets are serious about competing now while maintaining a foundation for sustained success.

Durant’s openness to a contract extension beyond 2025-26 further underscores this long-term vision.

Reports indicate that the Rockets and Durant’s camp have discussed two potential extension paths: a two-year deal worth approximately $112 million if signed promptly, or a slightly larger two-year contract valued near $124 million if negotiations extend.

The official window to negotiate extensions opens on July 6, following the start of the new league year.

Reasons to stay in Houston

Beyond the financial and contractual elements, Durant’s motivation to remain with Houston is tied to the team’s young core and coaching staff.

The Rockets boast rising stars like Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith, and Alperen engün, who provide a strong foundation for future success.

Additionally, Durant’s relationship with head coach Ime Udoka, whom he has worked with previously through Team USA, adds a layer of trust and familiarity that can be crucial in a player’s decision to stay long-term.

If the Rockets commit to Durant as the cornerstone of their franchise, this trade could mark the beginning of the final chapter of one of basketball’s greatest careers, one that ends with Durant proudly wearing a Rockets jersey.
