Kevin Durant blames Stephen Curry for what he sees as the steady decline of the NBA All Star Game

The NBA All-Star Game has long been a showcase of the league’s brightest stars, but recent years have seen a persistent struggle to maintain its competitive integrity. Over the past decade, the NBA has experimented with various formats in an attempt to address criticisms of a lack of defense and effort. From the traditional East vs. West matchups to the more recent captain’s draft and the introduction of a target score, the league has sought to reignite the event’s competitive spirit.

This season, the NBA is taking a significant step with a new format for the 2026 All-Star Game in Phoenix a three-team tournament featuring two USA teams and one World team. This change aims to capitalize on the growing international talent pool and the star power of American players, hoping to draw fans back to an event that has faced increasing scrutiny.

Durant Criticizes Curry and Lillard

However, not all players are optimistic about the future of the All-Star Game. Kevin Durant, speaking on the Unguarded podcast, pointed fingers at Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard, blaming their tendency to take long-range shots for the event’s decline.

“Bron locked in every All-Star game. He not out there shooting from half court. I’m blaming Steph. It’s Steph’s fault. He comes out there and shoots half court, bro. I’m blaming him for the All-Star game. I’m blaming Dame too,” Durant said, highlighting a perceived lack of defensive effort when these players dominate with their signature shots.

His comments come at a time when the All-Star Game has been criticized for its lopsided scores and lack of competitiveness, with the 2025 game in San Francisco being a recent example of these issues.

The 2026 All-Star Game in Phoenix will be a critical test for this new USA vs. World format. The league hopes that the star power of players like Durant, Curry, and LeBron james, combined with the international flair, will reignite fan interest. However, Durant’s critique raises questions about whether the fundamental problems of the All-Star Game can be addressed through format changes alone.

The NBA’s decision to pit USA against the World is a response to the growing international influence in the league, with players like Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the charge. This format change aims to create a more engaging narrative, but the underlying issues of player effort and game structure remain unresolved.
