Kelce’s final season? Chiefs GM Veach excited to keep star tight end in 2026

Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach recently expressed his gratitude that star tight end Travis Kelce will return for the 2026 season, putting to rest weeks of speculation about the future of one of the NFL’s most iconic playmakers. Speaking on The Schrager Hour with ESPN’s Peter Schrager, Veach highlighted just how vital Kelce is – not only for his on-field contributions but also for the culture he fosters within the team.

“It’s a business, and it’s cutthroat, but just uplifting people around you – you could go in there with an attitude of, We’re in this together, and we’re going to uplift each other,” Veach said. “He puts a smile on someone’s face every single day. It doesn’t matter if you win a game by three touchdowns or if you lose a game.”

Kelce, who has long been one of the Chiefs’ most reliable offensive weapons, recently signed a three-year contract extension to remain in Kansas City.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $54.735 million, with a maximum potential value of $57.735 million and an average of $18.245 million per year.

The first year guarantees $12 million, with an additional $3 million possible through incentives. This contract ensures that Kelce will remain a central figure in the Chiefs’ offensive strategy while maintaining his presence as a leader in the locker room.

Legacy of leadership and laughter

While the financial details of the deal have drawn attention, Veach emphasized the unique influence Kelce has on his teammates.

“Everything he does, he does with a smile,” Veach said. “It’s easy to lose sight of that and get into this headspace where it’s always negative. He just keeps a positive spin and uplifting spin on everything he does.”

Veach added that when Kelce eventually retires, his energy and leadership will be nearly impossible to replace.

Statistically, Kelce continues to cement his place among the NFL’s all-time greats. Entering the 2026 season, he ranks third in career receiving yards for tight ends, trailing only Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten.

He sits just over 2,000 yards behind Gonzalez‘s record and only 45 yards behind Witten for second place, milestones that underscore a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Many expect 2026 to be Kelce‘s final season, which could see his remaining contract impacts distributed over future salary caps.

For Chiefs Kingdom, the news is a relief and a cause for celebration. Kelce‘s return means Arrowhead Stadium will once again experience his blend of skill, leadership, and infectious positivity.

Beyond the touchdowns and catches, it’s the presence he brings to the locker room and the energy he contributes to the team that makes him irreplaceable. As the 2026 season approaches, fans and teammates alike will eagerly watch one of football’s most dynamic tight ends continue to leave his mark.
