Kawhi Leonard might be the only way Warriors can keep Steve Kerr and Stephen Curry together

The Golden State Warriors are going through a season that they simply haven’t been used to over the past decade and a half. It hasn’t been a disaster, and they’re locked into a play-in sport, but at 36-40, it’s an odd feeling for Stephen Curry and head coach Steve Kerr.

Curry will be back from injury soon and should give the team a jolt for the play-in, but they know they don’t have enough firepower to compete for real. With that in mind, eyes have already turned to the 2026-27 season to see how the franchise can turn things around and become an elite team once again.

While there have been murmurings about Curry potentially jetting off, everything is pointing to the legendary point guard staying with the team next season. Kerr is another story, though. According to reports, Kerr hasn’t told the team what his plans are for after this season. Apparently, Kawhi Leonard could be the key for Kerr staying or leaving.

Warriors were close to acquiring Kawhi Leonard at trade deadline

Bay Area reporter Tim Kawakami revealed on Thursday that the Warriors were close to trading for Leonard at the deadline, but the Los Angeles Clippers pulled out of negotiations. Leonard has been back to his old, dominant self this season and would have made a huge difference alongside Curry.

Leonard is set to be a free agent this summer, so Golden State can bring him in on a normal contract instead of having to give up anything in a trade to get him. With Leonard in tow, Kerr would surely be open to coming back for at least one more season.
