Kawhi Leonard makes rare public appearance at US Open amid Clippers’ salary cap investigation

Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard was seen courtside at the 2025 US Open semifinals on Friday night, quietly watching the intense match between tennis sensations Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Leonard’s presence at the tournament stands out not only because of his star power but also due to the ongoing NBA investigation involving him and the Clippers, which has added an intriguing backdrop to his offseason activities.

Leonard, a six-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Finals MVP, has long been one of the most formidable players in the league. However, this offseason has been marked by controversy. The NBA has opened a formal investigation into the Clippers and their team governor, Steve Ballmer, regarding allegations that they circumvented the league’s salary cap rules.

The probe centers around claims that Leonard received payments through an endorsement deal that came with little or no actual obligations, a potential loophole allowing the team to provide him with financial benefits outside the official salary cap limits.

Such allegations are serious because the NBA’s salary cap exists to maintain competitive balance among teams by limiting how much clubs can pay their players. If the Clippers are found guilty, it could lead to penalties ranging from fines to loss of draft picks or even voiding parts of Leonard’s contract.

This investigation has placed the Clippers’ front office under a microscope and raised broader questions about how NBA teams manage player contracts and endorsements in an era where money and marketing opportunities are increasingly intertwined.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Leonard has appeared unfazed, instead choosing to spend some of his offseason enjoying other sports. His attendance at the US Open is not new – he also attended the tournament in 2022 – but this year’s visit comes at a particularly tense moment in his career.

Watching top-level tennis allows Leonard to relax and perhaps draw inspiration from the competitive spirit displayed on the court.

Jimmy Butler’s support for Carlos Alcaraz shines at the US Open

While Leonard was watching the Sinner-Augier Aliassime match, another NBA star, Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler, made headlines for his interaction with tennis phenom Carlos Alcaraz.

After Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets to reach the final, Butler met with the young Spanish player, continuing a relationship that goes beyond casual fandom.

Butler has been an outspoken supporter of Alcaraz throughout the tennis star’s career. Their connection runs deep, as they briefly played against each other during the Qatar Open earlier this year, and Butler even served as a ball boy for Alcaraz during his match against Frances Tiafoe in the 2023 US Open.

This crossover highlights a growing trend of NBA players engaging with tennis, showing mutual respect and interest across sporting boundaries.

As the NBA season approaches, all eyes will remain on Leonard and the Clippers, with the league’s investigation casting a long shadow over the team’s offseason moves. Meanwhile, Leonard’s quiet presence at the US Open reminds fans that even amidst off-court drama, the passion for competition transcends sports.
