Kansas City Chiefs turn mediocre and now just fight to survive: the scenarios needed for reaching the playoffs

Once the NFL’s standard for consistency and dominance, the Kansas City Chiefs are suddenly fighting for something far more basic than a Super Bowl: survival. What was once a synonym of dynasty defined by AFC Championship appearances has, as many think, “stumbled,” leaving the team scrambling merely to stay above .500 and keep their postseason hopes alive.

Even with Patrick Mahomes or Travis Kelce on the team, it seems that they have to give 200% to obtain a single victory, when not long ago, they only had to perform at a 70% level to bag wins.

A team no longer recognizable

After a 2025 season marked by their inconsistency and overall struggles, the Kansas City holds a record of 5-5, placing them on the edge of the AFC playoff positions and far behind the team they once were.

Comparisons are odious, but if we look at the team that reached six straight AFC Championship Games, the current version looks, simply put, ordinary. The thing is, the team is not very different and the stars still have enough light to shine bright, so their downfall feels even stranger.

What not long ago was a team that used to scare their rivals as soon as they stepped into the field, glowing with confidence and trust, is now a squad afraid to fail, where every mistake is felt like another reason to stop trying. That is not the legacy this team has built.

What the Chiefs must do to reach the playoffs

Despite their struggles, the Chiefs still have fair options to qualify for the playoffs. They are not mathematically out but the road ahead is indeed narrow, where the scenarios required for postseason qualification are not to mess around with. According to current AFC standings, this is what they need to qualify:

  • Finish at least 10-7

Most AFC wild-card projections indicate that 10 wins is the minimum threshold for a playoff adventure. Now sitting at 5-5, they must win five of their remaining seven games. Going 11-6 would offer a safer margin of course, but even that result does not guarantee anything.

  • Improve AFC and divisional tiebreakers

Kansas City has already dropped several key conference matchups. If they want to survive the wild-card logjam, they need to win remaining AFC games, especially the ones against the Raiders, Chargers, and other potential tiebreak rivals.

  • Hope for mistakes from other contenders

Even winning out may not fully control the Chiefs’ fate. They need teams like the Browns, Jaguars, Broncos, and Texans to drop games down the stretch.

A fall taken very seriously Kansas City

This feels like a cold-water bath for players like Patrick Mahomes. In his case, he has never missed the playoffs stage and has never played a season where Kansas City was not viewed as a championship threat. Now, the franchise must heal its wounds and try to “get above 500.”

For a team accustomed to win and being feared, this sudden shift to vulnerability has shaken fans and analysts. The Chiefs are losing their winning aura and that is certainly something they need to work on bringing back.

Path is narrow, chances are few but hopes are high. Chiefs do not want to be that kind of team that stays in their comfort zone with a mentality of “we will do it next year”, they want to win even in practices and trainings. They still have options and oh my they will go for them.
