Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and the rest of the Hunt family is grieving the loss of his nine-year-old cousin, Janie Hunt, who tragically died in the devastating flash floods that struck Central Texas over the July 4 weekend.

Janie was among the 27 victims from Camp Mystic, a Christian all-girls summer camp in Kerr County, Texas, that was severely impacted by the flooding.

The floods, caused by heavy rains and rising waters along the Guadalupe River, have claimed at least 104 lives, including 28 children, and left 24 individuals still missing.

The flooding occurred after a mesoscale convective complex, partially fed by the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, brought torrential rains to the region.

In just a few hours, the Guadalupe River rose dramatically, overwhelming communities and causing widespread destruction. The disaster has prompted an outpouring of support from across the nation, with volunteers, emergency responders, and public officials coming together to aid the affected families and communities.

A heartbreaking loss for the Hunt family

Janie Hunt was the great-granddaughter of William Herbert Hunt, the oil tycoon and brother of Lamar Hunt, the founder of the American Football League and Major League Soccer. This makes her a relative of Clark Hunt, who now leads the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a heartfelt tribute, Clark’s wife, Tavia Hunt, shared her grief on social media, stating, “Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives – including a precious Hunt cousin, along with several friends’ little girls.”

As rescue operations continue and the community begins to heal, the Hunt family remains in mourning, reflecting on their loss and the broader impact of this tragedy on Central Texas.

The events have underscored the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events and the importance of preparedness and support in times of crisis.

The Kansas City Chiefs organization has not yet publicly commented on the tragedy, but the loss is felt deeply within the Hunt family and the extended Chiefs community.

As the region begins the long process of recovery, the Hunt family and many others continue to honor the memory of those lost and support the ongoing efforts to rebuild and heal.

For those wishing to help, local relief organizations and community support networks are actively working to assist families impacted by the floods.
