Kansas City Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker, posts emotional tribute to Charlie Kirk

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker shared a public message of support and prayer for conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on Twitter, after the political figure was shot and killed in Utah.

In the post, Butker commended Kirk‘s role as a husband and father and included a traditional Catholic prayer for the departed.

“Thank you for your strong witness for Christ @charliekirk11. Thank you for pursuing truth and leading your family as a husband and father. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen,” Butker wrote on Twitter.

The tweet reflects the intersection of Butker‘s faith and conservative political engagement, as well as capturing the national mood of grief as political violence hit the country.

Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, is a prominent figure in U.S. conservative circles and is widely recognized for integrating evangelical principles into political commentary.

Butker‘s public acknowledgment underscores his alignment with individuals who combine religious conviction and public leadership.

Butker’s religious views and public statements

Butker has consistently expressed his Catholic faith in public settings, often addressing issues at the intersection of morality, culture, and politics.

In May 2024, he delivered a commencement speech at Benedictine College that attracted national attention.

During the address, he criticized social trends he considered harmful, defended traditional family roles, and emphasized the importance of religious vocations.

The speech drew criticism for its commentary on gender roles and LGBTQ+ topics, prompting discussion about the role of faith in public discourse.

The Chiefs kicker has also voiced opposition to practices he believes conflict with his religious convictions.

He has criticized restrictions on the traditional Latin Mass and publicly opposed abortion and assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF.

Butker has used high-profile platforms, including NFL events, to express these positions, signaling a willingness to integrate personal beliefs with his public persona.

His faith has been a consistent guiding factor in his life. Butker has described his conversion from a nominal Christian upbringing to a committed Catholic worldview, influenced by close relationships with teammates who embodied devout practice.

This personal spiritual journey informs both his on-field conduct and off-field public statements.

Butker has also engaged with cultural and political debates more broadly. In July 2024, he publicly criticized a performance at the Olympics opening ceremony he deemed inconsistent with his religious principles, asserting that “God is not mocked.”

He has defended his right to express these views, even when they have sparked controversy, and emphasized the importance of dialogue and reflection within the context of his faith.

Through his social media and public appearances, Butker has positioned himself as a figure willing to speak about faith, morality, and civic engagement in ways that resonate with his personal convictions.

His recent tribute to Kirk highlights the ongoing integration of these themes into his public identity.
